What liver tests show alcohol damage?

A friend of mine has been drinking heavily for years and recently started feeling unwell. His doctor ordered some liver tests. I'm trying to understand, which specific liver tests would doctors typically look at to assess if there's damage due to alcohol?

From my experience, if you're concerned about alcohol damage, doctors usually look at a few key things. First are the Liver Function Tests (LFTs) – especially AST and ALT, which can be elevated. Then, GGT is a good indicator, it often rises significantly with alcohol consumption. Also, a FibroScan or ultrasound might be done to check for fatty liver or scarring. Just be honest with your doctor.

For alcohol-related liver damage, the main tests doctors usually order are Liver Function Tests (LFTs). Specifically, they look at AST, ALT, GGT, and bilirubin. High GGT is often a good marker for alcohol use. Sometimes they also check for mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in a CBC, which can be elevated due to chronic alcohol intake. If numbers are off, further imaging might be needed.

Hello! For assessing alcohol damage to the liver, the standard approach includes Liver Function Tests (LFTs). Elevated levels of AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase), and especially GGT (Gamma-glutamyl transferase) are strong indicators. Bilirubin levels might also be high. Additionally, your doctor might consider imaging like an ultrasound or fibroscan to check for fatty liver or cirrhosis. It's always a full picture, not just one test.

It's completely normal to feel worried and anxious if you're concerned about alcohol's impact on your liver. It's a scary thought. Doctors typically order Liver Function Tests (LFTs) to check enzymes like AST, ALT, and GGT. These give a good initial picture. But please, don't keep this fear to yourself; talk to a doctor who can guide you properly.

Just like how regular blood tests are crucial for monitoring thyroid, similar detailed tests are needed for the liver if alcohol is a concern. Key tests for alcohol damage would be Liver Function Tests (LFTs), looking at enzymes like AST, ALT, GGT, and bilirubin. An abnormal ratio of AST to ALT can also be indicative. Always get these done regularly and follow up with your doctor.

Hi, I'm just learning about this. So, if someone drinks a lot, will these liver enzyme numbers like AST and ALT definitely be high? Or can they sometimes look normal even if there's damage? And what is GGT exactly? Is it very different from AST/ALT?
