When to take 4 year old to er for fever?

My four-year-old son has a fever that keeps coming and going. He's also complaining of a headache. Should we just keep an eye on him, or is this something we should go to the ER for?

Keeping active and a strong immune system helps, even for kids. But for a 4-year-old with a fever, if it hits very high, like 104F, and they're really limp or struggling to breathe, then it's an ER situation. No amount of immunity building can fix that immediately. Get professional help.

For a 4-year-old, head to the ER if the fever is 104°F (40°C) or higher and doesn't respond to medication, or if they have symptoms like difficulty breathing, seizures, a stiff neck, severe headache, a non-blanching rash, or are unusually drowsy/unresponsive. These indicate a potentially serious condition.

This is a really important question! I don't have kids yet, but I always wonder what the 'red flags' are. From what I've seen, people usually go to the ER for a 4-year-old if the fever is super high and they look really sick, or if they're struggling with breathing. It's good to know for future.

As someone with thyroid issues, I'm always advised to keep track of my health markers. For a 4-year-old, if the fever is really high and doesn't come down, or if they're having seizures or problems breathing, it's an ER visit. Don't wait for your regular pediatrician appointment in such cases. Get immediate help.

For a 4-year-old, an ER visit is generally warranted for very high fevers (above 104°F/40°C) combined with severe symptoms. These include difficulty breathing, seizures, a rash that doesn't disappear when pressed, a stiff neck, or extreme lethargy. It's always best to consult your pediatrician for specific advice, but for emergencies, the ER is the way to go.
