When is weight loss a concern?

I've noticed I've lost some weight recently without trying, and a few people have commented on it. I'm not on any diet. When is unintentional weight loss a sign that something might be wrong and I should see a doctor?

I understand the worry. Sometimes weight loss just happens, but if it's sudden and you haven't changed your diet or exercise, it's definitely something to look into. If you're losing more than 5% of your body weight in 6-12 months without trying, please consult a doctor. Don't just try home remedies for this.

Generally, if someone loses a significant amount of weight (like 4-5 kg) in a short time without actually trying, it's a good idea to get it checked. Especially if you also feel very tired, have changes in appetite, or other new symptoms. It's best to rule out any underlying issues.

I can only speak from my experience. I lost a lot of weight very quickly when I was under a lot of stress, and everyone around me got worried. It turned out to be stress-related, but my doctor still ran a bunch of tests to make sure. So if it's unexplained and fast, definitely get it checked out.

Unexplained weight loss is always a flag. If it's more than 5-10% of your body weight over 6-12 months, without any deliberate effort like dieting or increased exercise, you should definitely consult a physician. Self-diagnosis or relying on internet advice isn't wise here; a doctor can run tests to understand the cause.

My doctor explained that if you lose more than 5% of your body weight within 6 to 12 months, and you haven't been intentionally trying to lose weight, then it's considered clinically significant and warrants investigation. They look for other symptoms like fatigue, changes in appetite, or pain. It's always better to get a professional opinion.

Beta, if you are losing weight without trying, and you also feel weak or tired, then it is a concern. Our elders always said to keep an eye on these things. While good food and rest are important, for sudden weight loss, you must show it to a doctor. Don't just ignore it thinking it will pass.
