What laxative is safe for pregnancy?

I'm pregnant and dealing with constipation, which is quite uncomfortable. My doctor said I could try a mild laxative, but I want to make sure it's safe. What laxative is generally considered safe during pregnancy?

When managing health during pregnancy, one must be very careful about sugar levels as well. Bulk-forming options like Isabgol (psyllium husk) are generally considered safe, but make sure to take it without any added sugar. Please verify this with your obstetrician.

Please do not take any over-the-counter laxatives during pregnancy without consulting your gynecologist first. While some fiber supplements are common, any self-medication can pose risks to the baby. It is always safest to get a prescription directly from your doctor.

I was researching this for my sister, and it seems like doctors usually suggest natural fiber like Isabgol or mild osmotic laxatives like lactulose. It is quite a common issue, but definitely worth confirming with the doctor during the next checkup.

Instead of chemical laxatives, try taking one spoon of Isabgol with warm water at night, which is very safe and cheap. Eating ripe bananas and drinking plenty of warm fluids throughout the day also helps a lot with pregnancy constipation.

I tracked my hydration levels on my fitness app during my pregnancy to manage constipation. If dietary fiber and water aren't enough, doctors often recommend lactulose syrup as a safe option. Do log your symptoms and discuss them with your gynecologist.
