What is considered sudden weight loss?

My mother has lost weight quite unexpectedly in the last couple of months. What amount or rate of weight loss is considered 'sudden weight loss' that might indicate an underlying problem?

Losing 4-5 kgs in a month while eating all your favorite street food is definitely sudden! Joking aside, any rapid drop without putting in any effort is considered sudden weight loss and shouldn't be ignored.

Medically, an unexplained drop of 4.5 to 5 kgs or 5% of your body weight in six months is sudden. If you notice this, make time to schedule a complete body checkup immediately.

Yes, losing more than 5% of your body weight within 6 months without any lifestyle changes is considered sudden. It is best to consult a doctor.

I totally get how scary it is to watch the numbers on the scale drop for no apparent reason. Losing a lot of weight quickly is considered sudden, so please be gentle with yourself and get a doctor's opinion.

Oh my, sudden weight loss always makes me worry about silent thyroid issues or worse. If you are dropping weight without dieting or exercise, please get a blood test done just to put your mind at ease.

In our time, sudden weight loss was often a sign of weak digestion or worms. While you can drink warming ginger tea and eat nutritious foods, a sudden drop always requires a proper checkup by a physician.

Losing a significant amount of weight, like 5% of your body weight in a few months without trying, is considered sudden. Please consider seeing a doctor to ensure everything is okay.
