What are the first signs of liver damage from alcohol?

My husband drinks alcohol regularly, maybe a bit too much. I'm worried about his liver health. What early signs should we be looking for that might indicate liver damage from alcohol?

Hey, it's really good you're looking into this. Liver damage from alcohol can creep up slowly. Early on, you might just feel tired all the time, have some mild abdominal pain or discomfort, especially on the upper right side. Sometimes, unexplained weight loss can also be a sign. If you or someone you know drinks heavily and notices these, please get it checked out by a doctor soon.

I've heard that early signs can be super subtle, which is scary. Like, just feeling tired or having a bit of tummy ache. But if you drink a lot, and you start seeing yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), or your pee becomes really dark, that's a big red flag. Also, swollen ankles can be a sign. Please, don't ignore these things, go see a doctor!

Alcohol-related liver damage often presents with non-specific symptoms initially, making it difficult to detect. These can include fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort (particularly in the upper right quadrant), and loss of appetite. As it progresses, more noticeable signs like jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), dark urine, swelling in the legs/ankles, and unexplained weight loss may appear. It is imperative to consult a gastroenterologist or hepatologist for timely diagnosis and intervention.

For liver damage from alcohol, time is a critical factor. If you're a heavy drinker and noticing persistent tiredness, vague abdominal pain, or even slight yellowing of eyes, don't procrastinate. Get a liver function test (LFT) done. It's a quick blood test and can give valuable insights. Early detection means better chances of reversing damage or managing it effectively, saving you a lot of future hassle and health issues.
