Is topiramate used for weight loss?

My doctor suggested this medicine, Topiramate, for something else, but my friend told me it can also help with weight loss. I've been trying to lose some weight for a while now, so I'm curious if this is true or just a rumor.

Beta, in my long experience, taking strong prescription drugs for weight loss usually backfires with side effects. Some doctors do prescribe topiramate, but it is actually meant for nerve issues or seizures. Focus on slow, natural lifestyle changes instead.

At Jupiter Hospital, the doctors strictly advise against self-medicating with topiramate. It is sometimes used as part of a weight loss combination, but only under very strict medical supervision because of the potential side effects. Please ask your doctor clearly before taking anything.

Honestly, I've heard topiramate can cause crazy brain fog and make you feel like a zombie. I already don't get enough sleep, so I can't imagine losing my remaining brain cells just to drop a few kilos. I'd stay away unless a doc absolutely mandates it.

Topiramate is FDA-approved for weight loss only when combined with phentermine. On its own, it is an off-label use that my physician warns has side effects like mood changes, tingling sensation, and cognitive slowing. Never start this drug without a detailed clinical evaluation.

Please be very careful with this medicine. I was prescribed topiramate once and I suffered from severe dizziness and memory issues, which made it impossible to drive or work. I had to stop it immediately. Please see a doctor and discuss all the safety risks before taking it.
