Is topical lidocaine safe during pregnancy?

I'm pregnant and sometimes get muscle aches that I'd like to soothe with a topical pain reliever. My friend suggested a lidocaine cream, but I'm cautious about what I use during pregnancy. Is topical lidocaine safe while pregnant?

When I was pregnant, the gynecologists at Cloudnine always told me to check before applying any cream or gel. Topical lidocaine is generally considered low-risk because very little enters the bloodstream, but you must ask your doctor clearly before using it.

Pregnancy requires extreme caution with any active drug ingredients. Lidocaine is a category B drug, meaning it is generally safe, but applying too much can cause absorption into your blood. Please consult your healthcare provider to confirm the correct usage.

I had to get a minor dental procedure while pregnant, and they used a local numbing agent with lidocaine. My doctor said it was perfectly fine for that brief instance, and my baby was born healthy. However, I didn't use any over-the-counter creams myself.

As a nurse, I can tell you that topical lidocaine is safe if used in very small quantities for a short time. Just don't apply it on broken skin or use heating pads over it, as that increases absorption. Always inform your gynecologist before starting any new cream.

In our family, we avoid all unnecessary medications during pregnancy, even ointments. While topical lidocaine is often deemed safe for minor procedures, I highly recommend trusting your obstetrician's advice over any online forum.

My wife wanted to use a lidocaine cream for a skin issue during her second trimester. Our doctor told us it's mostly safe for small areas, but warned us never to apply it over large areas or open skin. Better to double-check with your gynac.
