Is sleeping on your back safe during pregnancy?

I'm pregnant and finding it hard to get comfortable sleeping on my side all night. Sometimes I want to just lie on my back for a bit. Is it truly safe to sleep on your back during pregnancy, or should I strictly avoid it?

From what I have read, it is safe in the early weeks, but as the belly grows, it is not recommended. The weight of the uterus can compress blood vessels, which might reduce flow to the baby.

It is better to sleep on your left side for safety. If you find side sleeping difficult, place a soft pillow behind your back to prevent rolling over, and put another pillow under your knees.

I just delivered last month! My gynecologist strictly told me to avoid back sleeping after the 4th month because it can cause backaches and low blood pressure. Left-side sleeping is definitely the best.

My wife's trainer and doctor both advised side sleeping to maintain optimal oxygen and blood flow. It also helps prevent lower back strain, which is common if you lie flat on your back.

Doctors advise side sleeping to ensure proper nutrient flow. Along with that, make sure you have a light dinner containing easy-to-digest food like khichdi so you don't feel bloated while sleeping on your side.

I used to panic when I woke up flat on my back in the middle of the night. But my doctor reassured me that brief periods won't harm the baby. Just turn to your side when you wake up.
