Is papaya safe during pregnancy?

My sister is pregnant and she's craving papaya. Her mother-in-law told her it's not safe during pregnancy. Is papaya really safe to eat when you're pregnant?

For pregnancy, ripe papaya in very small quantities might be okay, but honestly, it's safer to avoid it altogether. Why take a risk when there are so many other safe fruits? Just stick to apples, bananas, chiku, they are also good for you.

Haan na, ripe papaya is sometimes said to be okay, but jo green waala hota hai, usko toh bilkul avoid karna chahiye. It can cause problems. It's better to be on the safer side during pregnancy, no?

My gynaecologist specifically advised me that only very ripe papaya, without any green spots, is permissible in small quantities during pregnancy. The unripe one contains papain, which acts like prostaglandin and oxytocin, potentially leading to uterine contractions and miscarriage. So, caution is key; if in doubt, avoid it.

Fully ripe papaya, in moderation, is generally considered safe. Unripe papaya, however, contains latex that can trigger contractions, so it's a definite no. Always clarify with your gynaecologist, as individual cases vary.
