Is metformin used for weight loss?

I'm pre-diabetic and have put on some weight recently. My doctor suggested Metformin, and I've heard it can sometimes help with weight. Is Metformin actually used for weight loss, or is that just a side effect?

Hey there! 😊 While some people might experience weight loss on Metformin, it's not its main job. Doctors usually prescribe it for diabetes or PCOS to manage blood sugar and insulin. So, it's more of a side effect than the primary goal! Always best to chat with your doctor about your weight concerns. 🩺

I tried so many things for my weight, from lemon water to gharelu nuskhe, some helped a little, some didn't. For Metformin, what I understand is it's not directly for weight loss. It helps if your weight issue is linked to insulin problems, like in diabetes or PCOS. So practically, see a doctor to know the root cause.

Please, please do not consider Metformin for weight loss unless a doctor has specifically prescribed it for an underlying condition that causes weight gain, like PCOS or pre-diabetes. I ignored some health signals once and it became a bigger problem. Always get a proper medical opinion for medications.

Hmm, for weight loss, I'd rather try to cut down on my biryani cravings than take a pill not meant for it! 😉 Metformin is usually for diabetes or PCOS, where it helps with how your body uses sugar. Sometimes, that helps with weight too, but it's not a magic diet pill. A balanced diet and some fun exercise are better bets!

Hey, I understand the desire for weight loss, but it's important to know Metformin isn't a primary weight-loss medication. It's prescribed for specific conditions like Type 2 Diabetes or PCOS to manage insulin resistance. If you take it, any weight loss is usually a beneficial side effect. Always consult your doctor for weight management strategies.

For true, sustainable weight management, a holistic approach with mindful eating and some gentle movement like yoga works wonders. Metformin has its specific uses for health conditions. It's always best to understand the root cause of weight issues with a doctor's help rather than looking for a quick fix with medication not meant for it.

My doctor explained that Metformin's mechanism of action involves reducing glucose production by the liver and increasing insulin sensitivity. This can indirectly lead to some weight reduction, especially in individuals with insulin resistance or conditions like PCOS. However, it's not classified or prescribed as a dedicated weight-loss drug. The primary indication is metabolic control.

No, it's mainly for diabetes and PCOS. Weight loss can be a secondary effect but it's not the primary use.

Beti, for weight loss, our elders always said eat light, walk in the morning. These new-age medicines like Metformin, they are for diseases like sugar, not just to become thin. If your doctor suggests it for a specific problem, then take it. But don't look for shortcuts for healthy living, it rarely works.

Arre yaar, if there was one pill for weight loss, half of India wouldn't be worried about their tummy! Metformin is for sugar control, my neighbour takes it for his diabetes. If it makes you lose some kgs, that's just a bonus. Don't rely on it for weight loss, you'll just get tired like me thinking about all these things.

Seedhi baat no bakwas, Metformin is not for weight loss. It's for diabetes or PCOS, where it helps manage insulin. If you happen to lose weight, that's just a bonus. Don't take meds without your doctor telling you to, for the right reason. Simple.

As someone who understands meds a bit, Metformin is not primarily a weight loss drug. It's an antidiabetic medication that helps regulate blood sugar. While some people might shed a few kilos, it's usually due to its effect on metabolism and insulin resistance. If weight loss is your main concern, talk to your doctor about diet and exercise plans first.
