Is mag citrate safe during pregnancy?

I've been having some constipation issues, and my sister suggested magnesium citrate. But I'm pregnant with my first child. Is mag citrate safe during pregnancy, or should I avoid it?

Magnesium citrate is sometimes used for severe constipation in pregnancy, but my doctor warned that it can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance if overused.

Do not start taking magnesium citrate just because some internet forum recommended it for constipation. Run it past your doctor first.

It can be used occasionally, but safe fiber-rich foods are much better for pregnancy constipation.

If you are using it for constipation, maybe try having high-fiber fruits like prunes or oranges first before jumping to magnesium citrate.

While magnesium is essential, the high doses in citrate laxatives need medical supervision during pregnancy. Please ask your gynecologist for a safe prescription.
