Is liver good for pregnant women?

My sister-in-law is pregnant and struggling with some nutrient deficiencies. Someone suggested she eat liver, but I'm a bit worried about whether it's safe during pregnancy. Is liver good for pregnant women, or should she avoid it?

During pregnancy, it is actually safer to avoid liver. Even though it has iron, it contains very high levels of Vitamin A which is not recommended for the baby. Please stick to safe iron-rich foods like spinach and apples instead.

I was just reading an article on this on a parenting website! Apparently, the animal liver has preformed Vitamin A (retinol), and taking too much of it can cause birth defects. It is better to be safe and avoid it completely while you are expecting.

Oh, please don't panic if you accidentally ate a piece of liver recently! I did that in my first trimester and was terrified for days. My gynecologist reassured me that a small amount once is totally fine, but warned me not to eat it regularly during the rest of my pregnancy.

The general medical consensus is to avoid liver and liver products like pate during pregnancy. The concentration of retinol (Vitamin A) is just too high and can be toxic to the fetus. Focus on normal lean meats, eggs, and your doctor-prescribed prenatal vitamins instead.

As a mom, I would strongly suggest avoiding liver during pregnancy. High doses of vitamin A can be risky for the little one inside. You can ask your doctor for safe iron and folic acid supplements instead to keep your hemoglobin up.
