Is guaifenesin safe during pregnancy?

I'm in my second trimester and have a bad cough with a lot of phlegm. I was thinking of taking some over-the-counter medicine. Is guaifenesin safe during pregnancy for cough relief?

Please don't worry, dear, but when you are pregnant, you have to be extra careful with any cough medicine. Do not take guaifenesin or any over-the-counter syrup without asking your gynecologist first. Try some warm water and ginger tea for relief right now, okay?

When I asked my gynecologist about guaifenesin, she told me it is generally classified as Category C, meaning there isn't enough human data to prove it is 100% safe. She strictly advised me to avoid it, especially in the first trimester, and suggested steam and warm saline gargles instead.

My mother always tells us to use tulsi and hot water for cough during pregnancy, which is very safe. However, for medicines like guaifenesin, you must always consult your doctor first to make sure there are no issues for the baby.

Instead of spending money buying random syrups from the chemist, it is much safer to pay for a quick OPD consultation with your gynecologist. Self-medicating during pregnancy can cause complications that might end up costing much more later.

I can't say if it is safe for everyone, but when I had a bad cold in my second trimester, I avoided all cough syrups and stuck to steam inhalation. It is always better to be completely safe during these special months.
