How much weight does the average woman gain during pregnancy?

My sister is expecting and is really anxious about her changing body. She keeps asking me about typical weight gain. What's the average amount of weight a woman gains throughout her pregnancy?

For an average woman, they say 11-16 kg is typical for a healthy BMI. But for me, with diabetes, my doctor stressed on gaining only what was absolutely necessary and keeping a close watch on my diet to avoid blood sugar spikes. Every pregnancy is unique, so please check with your doctor for personalized advice on weight and diet.

Usually it's around 11 to 16 kgs, but honestly, it varies so much. My wife gained 13 kgs. The most important thing is to have regular checkups and listen to your gynaecologist. Don't stress too much about the numbers, focus on healthy habits. Time is precious, so make your doctor visits count!

Average? Hahaha, what is average in India? Everyone will have a different story. But for a healthy woman, my doctor said about 10-15 kg. Mine was more like 18 kg, aur kya karein, khana toh accha lagta hi hai! Bas baad mein utarne mein jaan nikal jaati hai.

I'm also wondering about this! My doctor gave me a range, but I keep seeing friends gain so much less or more. Is it normal to feel so much anxiety about the weight gain? I'm trying to eat healthy but sometimes cravings take over. Did anyone else feel this much pressure?

From my experience, the general guideline is 11.5 to 16 kg for a normal BMI. Don't obsess over the scales daily. Focus on nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and if your doctor clears it, some light exercise like walking. Your body knows what it's doing, and the baby needs those nutrients.

With PCOS, I know weight can be a sensitive topic, and during pregnancy, it needs extra attention. While the average is 11-16 kg, if you have PCOS, your doctor might suggest a slightly smaller or more controlled gain. It's really about healthy eating and not gaining too rapidly. Please discuss your specific situation with your Gynaecologist.

Generally, for a single pregnancy, it's about 25 to 35 pounds (around 11.3 to 15.9 kg) if you started at a healthy weight. But really, this is just an average. What matters is that you're eating well and your doctor is happy with your progress. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about your specific target.
