How long does it take alcohol to damage your liver?

My friend has been drinking heavily for a few years now, and I'm worried about his health. I know alcohol affects the liver. Approximately, how long does it take for alcohol consumption to actually cause significant damage to the liver?

Severe liver damage like cirrhosis typically takes 10 to 20 years of heavy drinking to develop. However, even short-term heavy drinking can cause fatty liver. It is always wise to reduce intake early in life to avoid regrets later.

It varies from person to person, but regular heavy drinking can start causing fatty liver changes in just a few years. I had liver complications because I ignored the early signs. Please get a liver function test and see a doctor to check your health status.

I totally get it, trying to understand the limits and worrying about long-term health is very stressful. Fatty liver can actually happen within weeks of heavy drinking, though it can heal if you stop. Take care of yourself.

Don't think your liver is safe just because you are young. While major scarring takes years, inflammatory changes can start much sooner than you think. Cut down on the alcohol now before the damage becomes irreversible.

Damage builds up over several years of daily drinking. A practical way is to have completely alcohol-free days every week and get a simple, budget-friendly liver function test done yearly to monitor your health.
