How early can a sonogram detect pregnancy?

After a positive urine test, my doctor advised me to schedule a sonogram. I'm curious, how early can a sonogram actually show a pregnancy?

Usually, a sonogram can detect a tiny gestational sac around 5 weeks of pregnancy. Try not to worry, just wait a little bit and your doctor will guide you on the right time for the scan.

Actually, going for a scan too early just increases your stress levels, yaar. I remember we went at 5 weeks and they couldn't see the heartbeat, which made us panic. When we went back in the 7th week, everything was perfectly fine!

True, doing a scan before 5 or 6 weeks is usually not very helpful as you won't see much. Waiting till the 7th week is best to hear the baby's heartbeat clearly.

An early ultrasound can cost anywhere between 1200 to 2500 rupees depending on the clinic. If you go too early, say at 4 weeks, they might not see anything and will ask you to come back and pay for another scan in two weeks. Better to wait till 6-7 weeks to save money.

Beta, the machine can see the little life inside only after about one and a half months have passed since your last period. Don't rush to the hospital too early, eat well and go when the doctor calls you comfortably.

At Fortis, our doctor advised us to schedule the first transvaginal ultrasound only after 6 weeks. She explained that doing it any earlier might show an empty sac, which causes unnecessary anxiety. Always follow your doctor's specific timeline for scans.
