Does weight loss help copd?

My doctor told me that if I lose some weight, it might help my breathing and overall COPD symptoms. I'm finding it hard to believe it would make such a big difference. Is there any truth to this, or is it just general advice?

Losing a bit of weight makes the body feel lighter, which helps with breathing. My uncle had breathing issues, and after he reduced some weight by eating light meals, he felt much more comfortable walking around.

Please take chest and breathing issues very seriously. I ignored my breathing trouble for a year thinking it was just weight gain, but it turned out to be chronic. Go see a pulmonologist immediately before starting any diet or exercise.

Keeping the body light helps the vital breath flow better. Along with a simple diet, gentle pranayama under a teacher can bring great relief to your lungs and overall health.

Carrying extra weight is like walking around with a sandbag on your chest, especially when your lungs are already tired. Losing a few kilos definitely makes breathing easier, though walking up stairs is still a project for me!

I was looking this up for my grandfather recently. From what I read, reducing weight reduces the pressure on your diaphragm, which helps the lungs expand better. It seems to make a big difference.
