Does weight loss cure gerd?

For a few years now, I've been suffering from GERD, and it's quite uncomfortable. My doctor mentioned that losing weight might help. I wanted to know if weight loss can actually cure GERD completely, or just lessen the symptoms?

Losing weight definitely reduces the pressure on your stomach, which helps stop acid from rising. Along with that, simple habits like avoiding tea on an empty stomach and walking for 10 minutes after dinner will give you huge relief.

See, losing weight reduces the abdominal pressure that pushes acid up into your food pipe. So yes, it helps a lot. But you also have to stop eating late-night junk, otherwise weight loss alone won't save you.

It won't always 'cure' it if you have a structural issue like a hiatal hernia, but shedding abdominal fat significantly lowers GERD severity. Less fat means less intragastric pressure. Get your BMI down and check the difference.

According to gastroenterologists, obesity is a primary risk factor for GERD because it compromises the lower esophageal sphincter. Losing even 5-10% of body weight can clinically reduce acid reflux symptoms. Always combine it with proper dietary tracking.

Yes dear, reducing your weight, especially around the belly, makes a very big difference for acidity. Try to eat smaller, frequent meals and avoid lying down immediately after eating. It helps immensely.

I used to pop antacids daily in my 40s when I was overweight. Once I modified my lifestyle, started walking, and lost about 10 kgs, my severe heartburn completely disappeared. Your body has a wonderful way of correcting itself when you treat it well.
