Does ulcerative colitis cause weight loss?

My cousin was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and he's lost a lot of weight very quickly. His family is concerned. Is weight loss a common symptom or side effect of this condition?

Haan bhai, isme vajan bahut jaldi girta hai kyunki pet kharab rehta hai aur khana pachtaa nahi hai. Sharir ko taqat nahi milti. Aap bilkul chinta mat kijiye, dhyan se dahi-chawal aur naram khana kijiye aur doctor babu ko dikhaiye.

When my cousin was diagnosed with this, he lost almost 12 kgs in just two months because of the frequent washroom visits and fear of eating. I don't know the medical science behind it, but seeing him, I know the weight drops very rapidly during a flare-up.

It can absolutely cause weight loss, just like thyroid issues can mess with your weight. You must get your regular blood tests and CRP levels checked to monitor the inflammation. Regular doctor follow-ups are the only way to manage these chronic autoimmune symptoms safely.

Haan na, weight loss toh bahut fast hota hai isme. Severe diarrhea and stomach pain ki wajah se we can't eat anything properly, ho na. Body energy use karti rehti hai but fuel nahi milta. So weight naturally down chala jata hai.

People online will tell you to eat random herbs or powders to stop the weight loss, but don't fall for that nonsense. Ulcerative colitis is a serious condition. If you are losing weight, it means your gut lining is inflamed, so go and get a proper clinical checkup immediately.

I used to wish for easy weight loss, but definitely not like this! With colitis, you are running to the toilet so much that your calories don't even get a chance to say hello to your body. Jokes apart, please see your specialist because this kind of weight loss drains all your energy.

Yes, it does. Weight loss happens because of chronic inflammation, active diarrhea, and poor nutrient absorption. If you are losing weight too fast, please monitor your hydration closely and check in with your gastroenterologist to adjust your medication dosage.
