Does tricare for life cover weight loss drugs?

My doctor suggested a few weight loss medications, but I'm already on a fixed income after retirement. I wanted to check if our existing long-term health plan covers these types of drugs. It would really help with planning my expenses.

Simple answer is no, Tricare for Life does not cover drugs specifically for weight loss. They follow Medicare guidelines which strictly exclude weight management medications. Your only chance is if the same drug is prescribed for a condition like type 2 diabetes.

Hey, Tricare for Life is basically a secondary payer to Medicare, so it usually follows Medicare's rules. Since Medicare doesn't cover weight loss drugs like Wegovy or Saxenda for cosmetic reasons, TFL also doesn't cover them. But if it is for a serious medical issue like diabetes, then sometimes there is a way.

According to current guidelines, Tricare for Life generally excludes weight loss medications from coverage because they mirror Medicare's exclusion list. However, you should discuss this with your doctor. They can advise if there are alternative therapies or if your specific health profile qualifies you under a different category.

I panicked when I first found out how expensive these medicines are without insurance. But honestly, once I sat down with my doctor, we realized Tricare for Life covers other medical management options. Don't worry, even if the drugs are not covered, there are other paths to tackle this.

As a general rule, Tricare for Life won't cover drugs that are purely for obesity or weight loss. But look, if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, the doctor might prescribe something that helps with both. Always check the Tricare formulary search tool before you go to the pharmacy.

Tricare for Life and Medicare rules are very strict, yaar. They actually don't cover weight loss drugs directly because of some old laws. It is better to check with your doc if they can suggest some other lifestyle changes or generic alternatives.
