Does resistance training help with weight loss?

I've started going to the gym and my trainer is pushing me to do more weightlifting, or resistance training. My main goal is weight loss, and I thought cardio was better for that. Does resistance training actually help with losing weight?

Absolutely, it does! Building muscle through lifting weights increases your resting metabolic rate, meaning you burn more calories even when you are resting. Just combine it with a slight calorie deficit and enough protein, and you will see amazing body composition changes.

I used to hate stepping into the weight section of the gym because I was overweight and felt so judged. But once I started resistance training, my body became stronger and I actually started losing inches, not just weight. I know how intimidating it feels, but it is truly life-changing.

Yes, lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises is excellent for weight loss. If you are new to this or have any joint issues, check with your doctor first to make sure it is safe. Even simple resistance bands or light weights combined with daily walking can give great results.

I totally get it, trying to lose weight can be so confusing with so much contradictory advice out there. Resistance training is actually wonderful because it shapes your body and makes you feel strong, rather than just exhausted from cardio. Start slow and do what feels comfortable for you.

Yes, it helps very much. It builds strength and burns fat slowly and steadily. Take your time, don't rush into heavy weights, and you will see good progress.

While resistance training is highly effective for fat loss and bone density, you must ensure you have correct form to avoid injury. If you have any history of back pain, hernia, or high blood pressure, please get a clearance from your physician before starting any lifting program.
