Does parkinson's cause weight loss?

My father has had Parkinson's for several years now, and we've noticed he's lost a significant amount of weight recently. We're worried about his health and wondering if Parkinson's can lead to weight loss. Is this a common symptom of the disease?

Hey, yeah, my granddad actually lost a lot of weight when his symptoms started. It was super worrying for us but apparently, it's pretty common because of all the constant tremors burning calories. Definitely get a doctor to check it out though.

It really does cause weight loss, mostly because swallowing and chewing becomes a task, so they don't eat as much. My uncle had this issue, so we started making delicious, soft milkshakes and mango shrikhand for him. You have to make food easy and tasty to eat!

Yes, the involuntary muscle movements and tremors consume a lot of energy daily, leading to weight loss. To counter this, focusing on nutrient-dense, high-calorie meals is key. Consult a clinical nutritionist who can guide you on the right diet plan alongside their doctor's advice.

Seeing them lose weight like this is very tough on the family. We used to give my father small, frequent meals like soft khichdi with lots of ghee and easily digestible ragi porridge. It helps to keep their energy up without making them struggle with chewing.

Yes, weight loss is quite common. Along with a good diet, keeping up with very light, doctor-approved physical activities or small walks helps maintain muscle mass. Don't let them sit idle for too long, movement is medicine.

Yes, weight loss can happen, so we have to be very careful with their diet. Try incorporating protein-rich vegetarian options like well-mashed paneer, daal soup, and soft tofu. It is always best to run any major diet changes by their main treating doctor first.

Please do not ignore this weight loss thinking it's just old age. We ignored my elder brother's sudden weight drop for months, and by the time we went to the specialist, his Parkinson's had progressed. Go see their doctor immediately to get their nutrition and meds adjusted.
