Does malabsorption cause weight loss?

I've been losing weight without really trying, even though I eat pretty normally. My doctor mentioned something about malabsorption, and now I'm wondering if that's why I'm getting thinner. Can poor nutrient absorption lead to significant weight loss?

If your body cannot absorb nutrients from the food you eat, you will definitely lose weight and feel extremely weak. This is not something to ignore or treat at home. Go straight to a good gastroenterologist and get it checked.

Yes, it does. My doctor explained that when the small intestine is inflamed or damaged, it cannot absorb fats, proteins, or vitamins, leading to rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiencies. They had to run specific stool and blood tests to diagnose my condition.

For mild stomach weakness, we usually drink buttermilk with roasted cumin or eat light khichdi. But if you are losing weight rapidly despite eating well, home remedies won't help. You must consult a doctor to see why the nutrition is not reaching your body.

Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of many serious gastrointestinal issues, including malabsorption or even thyroid problems. Please do not delay getting a proper diagnosis. It is very important to get a complete physical examination and blood work done.

I track my daily macro intake on MyFitnessPal, and if you are logging enough calories but still consistently losing weight, something is definitely off with your gut absorption. You should log your symptoms along with your food and show the data to a specialist.
