Does herpes cause weight loss?

I've noticed I'm losing weight without really trying, and it's a bit concerning. I've also had herpes outbreaks occasionally. Could there be a connection, does herpes cause weight loss?

When I had oral herpes, the painful cold sores in my mouth made it impossible to enjoy my favorite biryani or even drink tea! Naturally, I ate much less for a week and lost a bit of weight. But once the sores healed, my appetite came back with a vengeance.

During any viral outbreak, the body redirects its life force or 'prana' towards healing the infection, which can temporarily reduce your appetite and cause slight weight loss. Practice gentle breathing and eat light, easily digestible meals like khichdi to support your body during this time.

Herpes itself doesn't directly burn fat or cause weight loss as a primary symptom. However, the stress of an outbreak, high fever, or painful mouth ulcers can certainly make you eat less and lose a few kilos. Make sure you are staying hydrated with coconut water and buttermilk.

If you are losing a lot of weight during a herpes outbreak, it's probably because of the physical stress and not eating well. Don't worry about expensive supplements; just have simple dal-rice and take proper rest. If the weight loss continues, please consult your doctor.

Rapid or unexplained weight loss is not a standard symptom of herpes. Don't trust random online forums linking the two; there might be some other underlying health issue that needs checking. Please go to a proper doctor and get basic blood tests done.

In my seventy years, I have seen that any virus can temporarily weaken the body and cause some weight loss due to poor appetite. Do not worry, once the infection passes and you regain your strength, your weight will return to normal. Just focus on resting well.

Dealing with PCOS has shown me how easily our weight can fluctuate due to hormonal stress and illness. While herpes might make you eat less due to discomfort, significant weight loss shouldn't be ignored. It's always best to discuss this with your physician to be safe.
