Does hctz cause weight loss?

I've just started taking HCTZ for my BP, and I heard some people actually lose weight on it. Is it common for this medication to cause weight loss? I am trying to manage my weight too, so curious to know.

Haan, it actually can cause some weight loss initially, but don't get excited because it is only water weight, na. HCTZ is a diuretic that helps flush out extra fluid from your body. It won't help you burn actual body fat, so don't use it for dieting.

Oh, it definitely sheds water weight because you are running to the washroom every hour! But honestly, that weight comes back the moment you enjoy a good salty meal or some street food. It is strictly a blood pressure medicine, so don't expect it to act as a weight loss trick.

I was so worried when my weight suddenly dropped by two kilos in a week after starting HCTZ. I thought something was seriously wrong with me! But my doctor explained it is just the excess fluid leaving the body. Try not to panic, but do keep your doctor updated on any changes.

Yes, you might see the scale drop because of fluid loss, but you must track your potassium and sodium levels as they can drop too. A basic electrolyte panel test is quite cheap, around 300 rupees, so plan to get that done regularly. Don't stop or change doses without a proper doctor's prescription.

HCTZ is prescribed to manage hypertension by reducing fluid retention, which naturally leads to initial water weight loss. However, this is not a true reduction in adipose tissue or fat mass. For sustainable and healthy weight loss, relying on a balanced diet and consulting your doctor is always the best approach.
