Does diet soda hinder weight loss?

I've been very careful with my diet and exercise for weight loss, but my progress is slower than expected. I drink a diet soda almost daily. Could diet soda hinder weight loss, even if it's calorie-free?

Look, if you are replacing regular sugar cold drinks with diet soda, it helps with calorie cut. But don't think you can drink three cans daily and lose weight. It still triggers sweet cravings which makes you eat more food later. Keep it limited, simple.

I went through this exact confusion during my college days when I was trying to shed some weight. While diet soda technically has zero calories, it did cause a lot of bloating for me which made me feel heavier. Swapping it with unsweetened green tea or coconut water worked much better.

Honestly, I used to drink diet coke thinking I can eat two extra momos with it. But those artificial sweeteners actually made me crave spicy and sweet things even more after an hour. Now I just have simple nimbu paani without sugar instead of cheating.

I can only speak from what happened with me. When I completely stopped diet sodas and shifted to plain water, my weight loss plateau finally broke after two months of struggle. I feel much lighter now and don't get those sudden midnight sugar cravings anymore.

My father always tells me to stick to traditional buttermilk or tender coconut if I am thirsty. When I asked my doctor about diet drinks during my weight checkup, he said occasional consumption is fine but relying on it daily can mess with gut health and slow down weight goals. Better to consult your own dietitian.

My general physician explained that artificial sweeteners in diet sodas can confuse our brain's metabolism because they don't provide real energy despite tasting sweet. This can sometimes cause insulin spikes or increased appetite in some people. She advised me to strictly limit it to once a week if I cannot avoid it.
