Does diabetes cause weight loss?

My mother recently lost a lot of weight very quickly without trying, which is quite concerning for us. She hasn't been diagnosed with diabetes yet, but we are worried. Can diabetes make you lose weight suddenly?

Oh God, sudden weight loss is so scary! I immediately start googling terrible things. But yes, diabetes can cause rapid weight loss because your body can't use glucose, so it starts burning muscle and fat instead. Please get your blood tested immediately to be sure.

It definitely causes weight loss, especially before diagnosis. Don't waste money on weight gain powders or expensive supplements. Just go to a local lab, get a basic fasting glucose and HbA1c test done for 300-400 rupees, and show it to a government hospital doctor first.

Yes, rapid weight loss is a classic symptom of high blood sugar. Please consult a doctor soon to get your levels checked.

I lost almost 7 kgs in just three weeks before I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year. My body was literally starving because the glucose wasn't entering my cells. Once I started my insulin therapy, my weight stabilized back to normal.

Yes, rapid weight loss happens because of glucose excretion. I log my weight daily on my health app, and when my sugar levels were high, the graph was dropping sharply despite eating well. Definitely get a continuous glucose monitor to track your daily patterns.

When my sugar crossed 350, I dropped weight like anything because the body flushes out sugar through urine. The only tip that works is getting your sugar under control with the right medication. Once your HbA1c drops below 7, your weight will naturally come back.

Yes, unexplained weight loss is a major red flag for diabetes. If you are losing weight without trying, don't ignore it hoping it will fix itself. Take half a day off work, visit an endocrinologist, and get your blood report done.
