Does creatine aid in weight loss?

I've seen some fitness influencers claim that creatine can help with weight loss, but I'm a bit skeptical. I thought it was mainly for muscle building. Does creatine aid in weight loss, or is that a misunderstanding?

I have seen many young youngsters use creatine. It doesn't directly burn fat or aid in weight loss. What it actually does is give you more energy to lift heavier in the gym, which indirectly helps you burn more calories. It is about hard work, not a magic pill.

When I consulted the clinical nutritionist at Manipal Hospital, she explained that creatine actually causes water retention in the muscles, making you look slightly heavier on the scale. She advised me to focus on a calorie-deficit diet instead of creatine for weight loss.

My son wanted to lose weight and started taking creatine, but he got discouraged when his weight increased by 2 kgs. I had to explain to him that it is just water weight inside the muscles. Parents, please guide your kids so they don't get demotivated by scale numbers.

If you look at your body composition app, you'll see that creatine increases your skeletal muscle mass and water weight, not body fat. Since muscle burns more calories at rest, it can help increase your BMR over time. Track your fat percentage, not just weight.

I panicked so much when I gained weight within 5 days of starting creatine! I thought it was making me fat. But after a few weeks, my body adjusted and I looked much leaner. Don't worry about the initial weight spike, it is completely normal.
