Does cholecystectomy cause weight loss?

My doctor suggested I might need to get my gallbladder removed soon. I'm wondering about the recovery and any changes to my body. Does undergoing a cholecystectomy typically lead to weight loss, or is that not usually an outcome?

Some patients do experience temporary weight loss after a gallbladder removal, primarily due to a low-fat dietary restriction and reduced appetite during recovery. However, any sudden or extreme weight loss should be discussed with your physician to ensure there are no underlying malabsorption issues.

If you lose weight after a cholecystectomy, it is simply because you are eating cleaner, low-fat foods to avoid indigestion. Once your digestive system adapts to the continuous bile flow, your weight will stabilize unless you actively maintain a diet plan.

I lost about 4 kg in the first month after my gallbladder surgery simply because I had to stick to boiled food and avoid office junk meals. It is a natural result of eating clean during recovery. Don't worry about it too much, your weight will stabilize soon.

In the initial weeks post-surgery, patients often lose a bit of weight because they are on a very light, low-fat diet to prevent diarrhea or bloating. Once you slowly reintroduce normal foods, your weight usually returns to baseline. Just make sure to transition your diet gradually.

Hey! I had my surgery last year and dropped a couple of sizes because I was so scared of eating fats and getting that terrible pain again. My body eventually adjusted, and I slowly got my healthy weight back once I started eating regular food in small portions.

I was researching this because my mother is scheduled for gallbladder surgery next month and she is worried about getting too weak. It seems quite common to lose a little weight initially because of the restricted diet, but most people manage to maintain their weight after a few months.

For me, the surgery resulted in an initial weight loss of 5 kg because I had frequent diarrhea whenever I ate anything heavy. My doctor had to adjust my diet and give me bile binders to help. It was a tough few months but things are much better now.

Yeah, I lost quite a bit of weight right after my surgery because greasy foods made me super sick, so I just stopped eating them. My appetite took about two months to fully come back. It is pretty normal, so just give your body some time to heal.

While temporary weight loss after surgery is common due to digestion changes, persistent weight issues could be linked to other hormonal factors like thyroid imbalances. It is always wise to get routine thyroid panel tests and follow up closely with your doctor during recovery.
