Does california medi cal cover weight loss medication?

My sister, who lives in California, is trying to lose weight and is considering some medication. She's on Medi-Cal. Does California's Medi-Cal program cover the cost of weight loss medications?

As someone managing diabetes, I know these medications are very expensive. Medi-Cal does cover some weight loss drugs, but usually only if you have a related health condition like Type 2 diabetes and have tried other lifestyle changes first. You have to get a prior authorization.

Dealing with weight issues when you have hormonal conditions like PCOS is incredibly tough. Medi-Cal does have options, but the rules change often, so it is best to ask your primary care physician to submit a detailed case for you.

Even if Medi-Cal covers the medication, those drugs work best when you combine them with regular exercise. If your doctor clears you, try starting with brisk 30-minute walks daily. It builds a great foundation while the medical side is being sorted out.

I am trying to get my doctor to prescribe some weight loss meds under Medi-Cal, but the paperwork seems so confusing. Has anyone here actually gone through the approval process recently? I'm so worried they will reject my application.

Yes, they do cover certain options under specific guidelines! 😊 Just make sure to chat with your doctor so they can send the right documents to the insurance board. Good luck, you've got this!

I keep reading conflicting things online about Medi-Cal cutting down on weight loss drug coverage and it makes me so anxious. But don't lose hope, just get a direct consultation with a Medi-Cal approved clinic so they can give you the exact current rules.
