Does blue cross cover glp 1 for weight loss?

I'm pre-diabetic and also need to lose a lot of weight. My doctor mentioned GLP-1 agonists. I was wondering if health insurance plans usually cover these medications for weight loss purposes, especially if there's a medical need?

It is so incredibly frustrating when you are fighting for your health and have to constantly worry about insurance coverage. I felt so defeated trying to get these medications approved. Please know you are not alone in this struggle.

Yes, Blue Cross covers GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy, but it strictly depends on your specific plan's formulary list.

I completely understand the anxiety you must be feeling about the costs and your health. It is very scary to think about starting a new treatment. Take a deep breath, call them, and take it one small step at a time.

If you are planning to get GLP-1, factor in the co-pay costs and the regular blood tests your doctor will prescribe to monitor your kidney and thyroid functions. Even with insurance coverage, these out-of-pocket expenses can add up quickly over the months.

While looking into insurance, keep focusing on daily movement and strength training. GLP-1 can help with appetite, but lifting weights helps prevent muscle loss during rapid weight reduction. Keep up the active lifestyle.

My physician pointed out that Blue Cross often distinguishes between GLP-1 for type 2 diabetes and GLP-1 purely for weight loss. Under many plans, Saxenda and Wegovy are covered for weight management, but Ozempic is strictly restricted to diabetes diagnoses unless you get a specific exception.

I recently got my GLP-1 prescription approved under my BCBS plan. My doctor had to submit a prior authorization form showing my high cholesterol levels and BMI. Once that was cleared, the process at the pharmacy was very smooth.
