Does blue cross blue shield cover glp-1 for weight loss?

I've heard a lot about GLP-1 medications for weight loss and am thinking of discussing them with my doctor. Do health insurance plans generally cover these newer weight loss drugs, especially for non-diabetics? Trying to understand the costs.

I researched this extensively for a family member. Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage for GLP-1 agonists like Wegovy or Saxenda depends entirely on your specific employer plan. My colleague's doctor confirmed they usually require prior authorization showing a BMI over 30, or 27 with co-morbidities like high blood pressure.

I totally get it, navigating insurance for weight loss is so exhausting and stressful. Many BCBS plans do cover it, but the approval process can take weeks of back-and-forth. Don't lose heart, just keep following up with your doctor's office.

These new injections might help, but they can have strong effects on your digestion. I always believe in warm water with lemon and fiber-rich foods first, but if you have obesity-related health issues, definitely consult a doctor. For insurance, a direct call to BCBS is the safest way to know.

I track my daily health stats on my smartwatch and was looking into GLP-1 options too. You can actually log into your BCBS member app and use the 'Price a Medication' tool. It instantly tells you if GLP-1 is covered under your specific plan tier.

I went through this exact same struggle with my BCBS plan last year. The secret is that your doctor must submit detailed medical records of your previous weight loss attempts showing they didn't work. Once they submit that proof, the GLP-1 approval usually goes through much faster.
