Does aetna cover ozempic for weight loss?

My friend mentioned Ozempic helped them with their weight. I was wondering, does Aetna cover Ozempic for weight loss, or is it only for diabetes?

Generally, Aetna does not cover Ozempic if the diagnosis is solely weight loss, as Ozempic is FDA-approved specifically for type 2 diabetes. If you need a GLP-1 for weight management, your doctor might suggest FDA-approved alternatives like Wegovy, which Aetna covers under some plans. It's best to discuss clinical options with your doctor.

Getting Aetna to cover Ozempic for weight loss is harder than getting my kids to turn off their phones. They will ask for all kinds of diabetes test reports before they pay a single rupee. If you don't have diabetes, be prepared to pay out of your own pocket!

My roommate was looking into this and apparently, Aetna is super strict. They rejected her Ozempic request because she didn't have type 2 diabetes. They basically told her Ozempic is only for diabetes and not for general weight loss.

Don't get stressed by the insurance rules. While Aetna typically reserves Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, they do have other options for weight management. Let's not worry too much; talk to your doctor and they will help you find a covered medication that fits your health needs.

I went through this exact battle with Aetna last year. They denied my Ozempic prescription because I am not diabetic, but my doctor successfully got Wegovy approved instead since my plan covers anti-obesity drugs. Ask your doctor to check your plan's specific weight-loss formulary.
