Does aetna cover glp-1 for weight loss?

I've been told by my physician that GLP-1 agonists could be beneficial for my weight. I just wanted to confirm if Aetna covers glp-1 for weight loss as part of their policy.

Managing PCOS weight is such a battle, so I understand why you are looking into GLP-1 options. I've read that some Aetna policies cover them, but they are very strict about prior authorization. I don't want to promise anything, so please verify directly with your doctor and insurance provider first.

These new medicines are extremely costly if paid out of pocket. Aetna covers them for some corporate employees but not for all. If they don't cover it, try discussing local generic alternatives or a structured diet plan with an affordable nutritionist, as that works out much cheaper in the long run.

Before you plan for GLP-1, factor in the cost of regular blood tests and doctor visits which might not be fully covered. Aetna's drug formulary changes every year, so check if the specific brand is on their tier-2 or tier-3 list. Planning these expenses beforehand is very important so you don't face sudden costs.

Don't lose heart if the insurance rules look complicated. Yes, Aetna covers GLP-1 drugs for some, but it requires your doctor to submit a detailed health profile. Just take it step by step, talk to your physician, and we will find a way to manage your health properly.

My uncle tried getting Ozempic through his Aetna plan for weight loss and they rejected it twice because he wasn't diabetic. They are super strict about GLP-1s now. You basically need a solid medical reason other than just wanting to lose weight.

I was looking into this too because paying for Wegovy out of pocket is literally impossible on my salary! Aetna does have coverage on some premium plans, but they usually require your doctor to prove your BMI is over a certain limit. Give them a call, the customer care people are actually quite helpful with details.
