Do high sodium foods cause weight gain?

I'm trying to lose some weight, and my dietitian told me to watch my sodium intake. She said high sodium foods can make you gain weight. Is it true that salty foods contribute to weight gain, or is it just water retention?

I worry about this constantly because I love savory snacks. High sodium doesn't actually add body fat, but it causes terrible water retention which makes the scale jump up overnight. It's really stressful to see that spike, but drinking water usually flushes it out in a day or two.

Yeah, absolutely. Every time I eat outside food or instant noodles, I look super bloated the next morning and my weight goes up by a kilo. It's just water weight, not actual fat gain, so it goes away once you eat clean for a bit.

Hey, don't stress too much about the sudden weight jump after a salty meal! It is literally just temporary water bloating because salt holds onto water. Just cut back on processed food for a couple of days and you'll be back to normal.

In our family, we love our pickles and papads, but my uncle who is a doctor always warns us about excessive salt. He explained that high sodium holds water in the body and elevates blood pressure. It is best to use salt in moderation for long-term health.

As someone who often relies on quick packaged foods during busy workdays, I've noticed immediate bloating from the high sodium content. It is definitely water retention rather than fat. Preparing simple home-cooked meals is the only practical way to control daily sodium intake.

Beta, eating too much salt from outside food causes puffiness on the face and body. Our traditional elders always suggested drinking plenty of water and eating coconut water or bananas to balance the excess salt in the system. Keep your food simple and light.

Be careful with high sodium if you find the weight gain or swelling doesn't go away. I had severe swelling in my ankles that I thought was just salt bloating, but it turned out to be related to my blood pressure. If the puffiness is persistent, please see a doctor.

My dietician at the hospital explained that while sodium causes water retention, the real issue is that high-sodium foods are usually high in calories and fat too. If you are struggling with unexplained weight gain, it's best to consult a clinical nutritionist for a personalized diet plan.
