Can women use finasteride for hair loss?

My hair has been thinning a lot lately, and it's making me quite self-conscious. I've read about finasteride being effective for hair loss. I wanted to know if women are able to use finasteride or if it's only for men.

I faced severe androgenetic alopecia and my dermatologist did prescribe me a low dose of finasteride, but only after making sure I was done having children because of the severe risk of birth defects. It works, but you absolutely need strict medical supervision and regular liver tests.

My sister was looking into finasteride for her thinning hair, and while our mother suggested sticking to traditional coconut oil and curry leaves, we consulted a doctor. The dermatologist explained that finasteride is generally not for women unless prescribed under very specific hormonal conditions.

At my age, half my hair is gone anyway, but my wife was getting very stressed about her hair thinning and asked about finasteride. The doctor laughed and said it's mainly for us men and can be quite risky for women. Better to leave it to the experts to decide!

Finasteride is a strong hormone-altering drug and is usually not recommended for women of childbearing age. I always focus on managing stress through daily jogging and a clean diet to help with hair health, but for medical treatments, always let a doctor guide you.

I panicked so much when my hair was falling out in clumps and was ready to buy finasteride online. Thankfully, my doctor stopped me and explained the hormonal risks, prescribing a safer topical lotion instead. Don't worry, there are plenty of other effective treatments for women!
