Can diet pop cause kidney stones?

I've had kidney stones in the past, and I'm very careful about what I drink. I prefer diet pop, but some friends are saying it's not good for kidneys and might cause stones. Is there a connection?

Don't worry too much, a single can of diet soda isn't going to suddenly give you kidney stones. But yes, sodas have phosphoric acid which can increase the risk if you drink them regularly instead of water. Just make sure you are drinking at least 3 liters of plain water every day, okay?

I totally understand why this is stressing you out, health fears are so exhausting. The link with kidney stones is mostly because of dehydration and phosphoric acid. It helped me a lot to just replace one soda a day with lime water, maybe you can try that to ease your mind?

It is really hard when you are trying to make healthier choices like switching to diet drinks, and then you read something scary like this. I used to feel so guilty every time I drank one. Just know you aren't doing anything wrong by having a craving, just try to balance it out.

Beta, these artificial drinks have too many chemicals which put pressure on our kidneys. In our times, we drank fresh coconut water or barley water (jau ka paani) to keep the kidneys clean. Try to drink these natural things and keep your water intake high.

See, straightforward advice—if you drink diet soda and forget to drink water, you will definitely get kidney stones eventually. Soda doesn't hydrate you like normal water does. Cut down the soft drinks and keep a water bottle next to you all day.
