Can diarrhoea cause weight loss?

I've had chronic diarrhoea for about a month now, and I've noticed I'm losing weight quite rapidly. My family is worried, and I want to know if diarrhoea can actually cause significant weight loss. Should I be concerned?

Oh absolutely, I lost like 3 kgs in four days when I got that bad stomach bug from the college canteen food. I looked super thin but honestly, it was just dehydration and I gained it all back the next week once I started eating normally.

Yes, but please remember it is almost entirely water weight and muscle glycogen loss, not healthy fat loss. During recovery, eat light vegetarian foods like bottle gourd soup and boiled rice. Avoid raw salads or heavy fiber until your bowel movements are fully normal.

It definitely causes a sudden drop on the scale, but it is purely dehydration and temporary. Don't neglect your work or health because of the weakness; get some ORS instantly and keep working from bed if you must. The lost weight will return once you are rehydrated.

Yes, it does cause quick weight loss due to fluid depletion and lack of nutrient absorption. When I had a severe bout last year, my doctor explained that this sudden drop is temporary and dangerous if not managed with electrolytes. They advised me to focus on hydration rather than celebrating the drop on the scale.

Please be very careful if the weight loss is sudden and significant. I ignored ongoing loose motions last year and ended up in the ICU with severe kidney dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If you are losing weight rapidly and feel dizzy, please see a doctor immediately.

My son lost so much weight during a bad bout of diarrhea last month and looked so pale. I kept giving him coconut water, light apple puree, and homemade khichdi every few hours. Don't worry about the weight right now, just focus on keeping their energy levels up.

The body loses its vital fluids and energy during loose motions, making us look and feel lighter. This is not true weight loss, but rather exhaustion of the body's natural reserves. Please take ample rest, practice deep breathing to calm the gut, and nourish yourself slowly.

It is the absolute worst diet plan on the planet, but yes, it works fast! Jokes apart, that sudden weight loss is just your body draining its water tanks. Don't worry, a few plates of mummy's handmade food and you will be back to normal in no time.
