Can depression cause weight loss?

My depression has been pretty severe lately, and I've completely lost my appetite. Because of this, I've started losing a noticeable amount of weight. Can depression actually cause significant weight loss, or is it just because I'm not eating much?

Yes, loss of appetite is a very common symptom when you are feeling low. To manage this practically, don't force yourself to eat heavy meals; instead, try having small portions of simple foods like dal-rice or khichdi every few hours.

I literally lost 8 kgs in two months when I was going through a major break-up and depressive phase. Food just felt like cardboard and I had zero motivation to eat. It definitely happens, so try to at least drink milk or shakes to keep your energy up.

Haan beta, jab man khush nahi hota toh khana gale se niche nahi utarta. Mere ghar me bhi jab mushkil samay tha, toh sabka vajan ghat gaya tha. Thoda dhyan rakho, aur roz thoda sa doodh ya fal zaroor liya karo.

Severe and sudden weight loss can be a sign of clinical depression, but it is critical to rule out other medical issues. I suggest visiting a good hospital to get basic blood tests and thyroid panels done to be absolutely sure of the cause.

To keep your strength up during low phases, try drinking warm milk with almonds or eating small bananas which are gentle on the stomach. However, if your weight loss is very rapid or accompanied by extreme weakness, please see a doctor immediately.

Totally, when I am highly stressed and down, I just completely forget to eat. My jeans started slipping off my waist last semester during exams. It is really tough but try keeping some nuts or biscuits near your bed to snack on.
