Are ssris safe in pregnancy?

I've been on an SSRI for a while to manage my anxiety, and now my husband and I are planning to start a family. I'm really worried if continuing this medication during pregnancy would be safe for the baby. What are the general recommendations for SSRIs during this time?

Actually it is a very tricky topic, yaar. You can't just stop antidepressants suddenly, but you also don't want to risk the baby's health. You really need to discuss this with both your psychiatrist and gynecologist.

My elders told me to just practice meditation and avoid all English medicines during pregnancy, but my doctor explained that a mother's severe anxiety can also harm the baby. We chose a safe, low-dosage SSRI under strict medical supervision.

Please don't feel guilty about needing mental health support during this time. Many women take them safely, but let your doctor guide you on the safest option.

Pregnancy hormones are already a wild rollercoaster, so trying to manage major anxiety without help is like riding it blindfolded! Talk to your doc, they have safer meds now so you don't have to suffer.

Some SSRIs are considered relatively safe, but some carry risks. You must consult your gynecologist before taking any psychiatric medication.

Please be extremely careful. Some SSRIs are linked to rare newborn heart or lung complications if taken in the third trimester. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without your doctor's explicit instructions.

Don't listen to neighborhood aunties telling you to just 'think positive' to cure depression. Sit down with your doctor, ask them about the safest brand, and follow their advice properly.

Mental stress can also shoot up your blood pressure, which is very dangerous in pregnancy. Sometimes staying on safe SSRIs is better than dealing with severe hypertension. Let your specialists coordinate and decide the best path.

I am planning to conceive soon and I am terrified of stopping my daily antidepressant. Has anyone here continued their SSRI during pregnancy and had a completely healthy baby? I really need some reassurance.

If you are prescribed SSRIs, keep in mind that you might need extra fetal echo scans or pediatric checkups at birth, which can increase your delivery budget. Plan accordingly with your insurance and doctor.
