Are cough drops safe for pregnancy?

Ever since I became pregnant, I've been extra careful about everything I consume. I have a sore throat and a slight cough now, and was thinking of taking a cough drop. Just wanted to confirm if it's generally safe for pregnant women.

With so many medical tests and delivery expenses coming up, we have to plan carefully. Don't waste money on fancy OTC drops that might not even be safe. A quick phone consultation with your regular government hospital doctor or family physician is cheap and much safer.

My bhabhi is pregnant and she also had a bad throat. Her doctor told her to avoid over-the-counter cough drops because of some herbal additives. Best to just call up your doc and ask for a safe brand.

Please be very careful with what you take. I had some blood pressure issues during my pregnancy and took an over-the-counter remedy that made me feel very dizzy. Please do not risk anything, always consult your gynecologist before taking even a single cough drop.

I agree that we must be cautious. Try sticking to warm salt water gargles until you can speak with your doctor about safe cough drops.

I had a bad throat infection just two weeks back during my fifth month. My gynac told me only specific plain menthol drops are safe, and to avoid the medicated ones. Definitely call your doctor to get the right name instead of guessing.

Many of these lozenges contain artificial colors, gelatin, or heavy chemicals that aren't great during pregnancy. I prefer using hot water with basil leaves (tulsi) and honey. Still, do check with your doctor before taking any commercial cough drops.
