Would a pregnancy test detect an ectopic pregnancy?

My sister is having some unusual symptoms and a positive home pregnancy test, but also some pain. We're worried about an ectopic pregnancy. Would a regular pregnancy test show if it's an ectopic pregnancy?

Hey, I totally understand your worry! I had the same question when I was pregnant and was super anxious. Generally, a normal home pregnancy test just checks for hCG, which means you're pregnant, but it can't tell you *where* it's located. For an ectopic pregnancy, doctors usually need an ultrasound to confirm. Please consult your gynaecologist for proper guidance, they'll clear all your doubts.

A standard pregnancy test will show if you're pregnant, yes. But it won't specifically tell you if it's ectopic. For that, further medical checkups are needed.

It's completely normal to feel worried about something like this, especially with all the info online. Your anxiety is valid. A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, which is present in any pregnancy, including ectopic ones. But to rule out ectopic, you need to see a doctor for an ultrasound. Please don't stress too much and get it checked soon.

My sister-in-law had a scare with this last year. Her home test was positive, but doc said they needed a scan to be sure everything was fine and in the right place. So yeah, home tests just say 'pregnant', not 'where'. Better to visit the doc, bhai.

May Waheguru bless you with good health and peace of mind. A simple test just indicates pregnancy. For such specific details, it is always best to seek professional medical advice. Keep a positive mind and take care of your health, everything will be fine.

Haha, if home tests could tell you *exactly* where the baby was, doctors would be out of business for half their scans! Jokes aside, no, a strip just says 'party's started!' not 'party's in the right room!'. Pls see a doc for the full guest list and venue check.

Yes, a normal pregnancy test will detect it because of hCG. But for location, you need an ultrasound from a doctor. Please don't rely only on home tests for this.

Hello dear, this is a very common concern. While a pregnancy test will indeed turn positive if you have an ectopic pregnancy because the hCG hormone is still present, it cannot differentiate between a normal and an ectopic pregnancy. The best course of action is to consult your doctor who will likely do an ultrasound and blood tests to confirm the location and viability. Don't delay, okay?
