Will lisinopril cause kidney damage?

My husband has been taking Lisinopril for his high blood pressure for many years. We heard from a neighbor that some BP medicines can affect the kidneys. I'm really worried, will Lisinopril cause kidney damage in the long run?

Lisinopril is given for blood pressure, and sometimes for kidney protection, actually. But like any strong medicine, it needs to be taken exactly as the doctor says. If there's already some kidney weakness, or if the dose is not right, it can affect kidney function. It won't directly cause 'damage' if used correctly, but it needs monitoring. Always follow your doctor's advice carefully and don't self-medicate.

I totally get why you'd be worried about this! It's scary to think a medication meant to help could potentially cause harm. Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, is actually often prescribed to *protect* kidneys, especially in people with diabetes or high BP. However, in certain cases, particularly at the start of treatment or in people with existing kidney issues, it can cause a temporary dip in kidney function. That's why doctors monitor kidney function when you start it. It's usually not permanent damage if managed.

I once ignored some symptoms and regretted it, so please don't take chances with your kidneys. Lisinopril is a powerful medicine. While it usually helps protect kidneys, sometimes it can lead to complications, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or are dehydrated. It's critical to have regular blood tests to check your kidney function while on it. Always follow your doctor's instructions meticulously.

I've tried many things for my BP, including home remedies, but medicines are sometimes necessary. Lisinopril is generally good for kidneys, but like all medicines, it has specific effects. It can sometimes affect kidney function, especially at the start or if there are other issues. That's why doctors always ask for kidney function tests when you are on it. So, talk to your doctor about your concerns and get regular checks.

It's really unsettling when you have to take medicine and then worry about its side effects, especially for something as vital as your kidneys. Lisinopril is often used to *help* kidneys, but in some cases, it can indeed temporarily affect kidney function, especially if a person is very dehydrated or has specific kidney artery issues. That's why blood tests are done. So, your concern is valid, and talking to your doctor about monitoring is key.
