Why does hair loss happen after pregnancy?
My friend just delivered a baby and she's complaining about a lot of hair loss. Is there a medical reason why women experience such significant hair fall after pregnancy?

Post-pregnancy hair loss, or telogen effluvium, is primarily due to hormonal shifts, specifically the sudden drop in estrogen levels after delivery. During pregnancy, high estrogen prevents hair from falling out, so after birth, all that 'extra' hair sheds. While it's very common, consulting a dermatologist or your gynaecologist is always recommended to rule out any deficiencies or other causes.
My doctor explained it really well. She said during pregnancy, your high estrogen levels keep hair in its 'growth phase' longer than usual. So you shed less. After delivery, estrogen drops drastically, and all that hair that would've normally shed gradually, falls out at once. It's temporary, and usually resolves as hormones rebalance, she assured me.
Haan, hair loss after pregnancy toh bahut common hai. Mere saath bhi hua tha. It's mostly because of hormones. Pregnancy ke time hair fall ruk jata hai aur delivery ke baad, saare baal ek saath girne lagte hain. Na, tension mat lo, eventually it gets better, but take good care of yourself.
Oh, the joys of post-pregnancy! Between no sleep and constant baby duties, your body just decides to shed hair like a winter coat. Honestly, I think it's the universe's way of saying, 'You need less hair to pull out when you're this tired.' It's hormones, mostly, but sleep deprivation doesn't help!

I went through this with both my kids. It's usually worst around 3-6 months postpartum. It's purely hormonal, the sudden drop in pregnancy hormones makes all your hair that was 'holding on' during pregnancy, shed. Focus on gentle hair care, a good diet, and managing stress. It will settle down, usually within a year.
