Why do you lose weight with cancer?

My uncle is undergoing cancer treatment and has lost a lot of weight. My family is worried. I want to know why do you lose weight with cancer? Is it the disease itself or the treatment?

Oh, this is a heavy topic. I always get scared thinking about these things. Losing weight without trying is definitely a red flag and needs proper medical attention. It's so important to get checked, right? My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this.

If only I could 'accidentally' lose weight like that without hitting the gym! But seriously, unwanted weight loss is no laughing matter. Our bodies are complex machines, and when something is off, it often shows up in unexpected ways. Always best to have a mechanic (doc!) check under the hood.

From a fitness perspective, sudden weight loss usually means a massive calorie deficit or some metabolic shift. With cancer, it's often because the body is working overtime to fight the disease, burning more calories, and sometimes appetite is also affected. Proper nutrition becomes even more crucial then.

I've heard this happens and it makes me quite nervous. Does anyone know if it's always a very noticeable weight loss, or can it be subtle at first? Just curious how one might identify it early. It's important to be aware.

My doctor always stresses that unexplained weight loss is a major symptom to watch out for, along with other things like blood pressure changes. It means something serious is happening inside. Regular checkups are so important for catching these things early.
