Why do diabetics lose weight in their legs?

My father has had diabetes for a while, and his legs look thinner than before, like he's lost muscle or fat there specifically. Is this common? Why do diabetics sometimes lose weight in their legs?

This is interesting, sometimes thyroid issues can also cause unexplained weight loss, but specifically in legs for diabetics, it points to poor glucose utilization. It means the body is breaking down muscle for energy. It's important to get regular blood sugar tests and consult your doctor to understand the exact cause and manage it effectively.

My uncle had this problem. His legs looked thinner, especially the calves. The doctor explained it's because his body wasn't getting energy from sugar, so it started breaking down muscle, and often, legs show it first. He had to really work on controlling his sugar and do some specific exercises.

Ho na, I've noticed this in some elderly people with diabetes. It's because the body is not able to use the sugar properly for energy, so it starts breaking down the muscles, especially in the legs. That's why it looks like they're losing weight there. Very important to keep sugar levels in check.

Ah, yes, this is something I've seen in many older diabetics. It's often due to the body struggling to use sugar for fuel, so it starts consuming its own muscle, and the legs are a major muscle group. Don't be too alarmed, but it definitely needs attention from a doctor to get the blood sugar under control and maybe some targeted exercises. It's manageable.

I literally went through this last year! My legs became noticeably thinner, and I was so scared. My endocrinologist explained it was due to uncontrolled blood sugar. My body wasn't processing glucose, so it started breaking down muscle tissue, especially in my legs, for energy. Getting my sugar levels consistent with medication and diet really helped reverse it. Please see a doctor.

Ah, the joys of getting older and having a few 'friends' like diabetes. Losing weight in legs is often the body's desperate attempt to find fuel when sugar isn't being used right. It starts eating its own muscles, and legs, being so muscular, show it quickly. Just another reminder that our bodies are constantly plotting against us, eh? Best to consult the doc, no jokes with this one.

I know how worrying unexplained changes in your body can be, especially with a chronic condition like diabetes. This kind of weight loss, particularly in legs, usually indicates that your body isn't getting enough energy from glucose and is breaking down muscle instead. It's a signal to get your blood sugar very well managed. Please talk to your doctor about it, they can guide you best.
