When can you not sleep on your back during pregnancy?

I'm in my second trimester now, and my doctor mentioned something about not sleeping on my back later in pregnancy. When exactly does it become unsafe to sleep on your back during pregnancy? I want to make sure I'm doing everything right for the baby.

So, from my experience, by the second trimester, around 20-24 weeks, it becomes uncomfortable and doctors advise against sleeping flat on your back. The growing uterus can press on a major blood vessel (vena cava), which reduces blood flow to you and the baby. I used to put a pillow under one side of my back to slightly tilt myself, or just switch to side sleeping. Side sleeping is best!

My sister was told to stop sleeping on her back after her first trimester, around 20 weeks or so. The baby gets too big and it can cut off blood supply or something, not good for the baby. She started using a pregnancy pillow and slept on her side. Pretty standard advice I guess.

Given my previous complications, I became very careful with everything. It is generally advised to avoid sleeping flat on your back after the first trimester, usually starting from around 20 weeks. This is because the weight of the uterus can compress major blood vessels. For safe sleeping positions, especially if you have any concerns, please consult your gynecologist immediately.

Don't sleep on your back post the first trimester, generally from about 20 weeks onwards. The baby gets heavy, and it can compress a major vein, reducing blood flow. Left side is your best friend. Get a good pregnancy pillow, it makes a huge difference!

Okay, so typically, by the mid-second trimester, around 20-24 weeks, you'll be advised to avoid sleeping flat on your back. The reason is that your growing uterus can put pressure on the inferior vena cava, which can affect blood flow. Side sleeping, especially on your left side, is recommended as it's better for circulation. You can use pillows to get comfortable.

From a medical perspective, it is generally recommended to avoid sleeping flat on your back from the second trimester onwards, typically around 20 weeks of pregnancy. The expanding uterus can exert pressure on the inferior vena cava, which can restrict blood flow to both the mother and the fetus. Side sleeping, particularly on the left, is usually advised. However, always consult your obstetrician for personalized guidance.
