What not to do with knee arthritis?

My mother has severe knee arthritis, and she's always complaining about pain, especially after certain activities. I want to help her manage it better. What are some things she should definitely not do or avoid when she has knee arthritis?

My mom has knee arthritis and she was told to absolutely stop sitting cross-legged on the floor. Also, avoid wearing high heels or flat shoes with no cushioning, as they put direct pressure on your knee joints. Investing in good orthopedic slippers really helped her.

I totally get it, the constant joint pain can be so exhausting. Please do not completely stop moving your legs, as total inactivity will just make the joints stiffer and more painful. Try to do very gentle leg stretches while sitting on a chair instead.

It feels incredibly frustrating when you can't even climb a flight of stairs without pain. Do not push yourself to walk through severe, sharp pain thinking it will make you stronger. Listen to your body and don't feel guilty about taking rest or using a walking stick.

I've been managing knee arthritis for five years now. Avoid running on hard concrete and completely stop doing deep squats. Instead, focus on quadriceps-strengthening exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist; they are the absolute key to reducing knee pressure.

Do not ignore excess body weight, as every extra kilo multiplies the stress on your knees. Avoid sitting in low chairs which require you to struggle while standing up. Opt for elevated seating and schedule a consult with an orthopedist to plan long-term care.

Do not jump into heavy weightlifting or high-impact jogging. If your doctor or physiotherapist allows, try low-impact walking on a flat, even surface with well-padded sports shoes. Keeping active is crucial, but only within safe limits.

When I was first diagnosed, I thought my walking days were over. But trust me, you should not give up. Avoid lifting heavy packages and stop using the stairs where escalators are available. Gentle, daily cycling or swimming will keep your joints lubricated and active.

Avoid doing high-impact jumping exercises or running! 🏃‍♀️ Try low-impact movements like swimming or using an elliptical machine instead. Keeping your knees happy is all about being gentle and consistent! 😊
