What not to do during radiation treatment for breast cancer?

My neighbor is undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer, and she's feeling quite weak. I want to help her understand what activities or habits she absolutely must avoid during this time to make sure she stays as safe and comfortable as possible.

Bhai, radiation chal raha hai toh skin ka dhyan rakhna bohot zaroori hai, haan? Us area par bina doctor se pooche koi bhi random cream, powder ya perfume mat lagana. Aur dhoop se toh bilkul bacha ke rakhna skin ko.

Do not skip your scheduled radiation sessions as consistency is critical for effective treatment. Avoid wearing tight, synthetic clothing over the treated area; opt for loose cotton shirts instead. Set up a direct contact line with your oncology nurse for any sudden skin peeling issues.

Please avoid ignoring your fatigue levels, as radiation takes a heavy toll on the body. Just like managing my thyroid, keeping up with regular blood tests and oncology follow-ups is absolutely necessary to monitor your overall strength. Rest as much as possible and don't push yourself.

I am not an oncologist, but from what I have learned from family members, you should avoid washing off the ink markings made by the radiation team. Also, do not use very hot water on the treated area. Take it very easy and rely on your medical team's guidelines.

Beta, do not scrub the treated skin with any rough scrubbers when you are bathing. Use only very mild soap and cool water, and pat it dry very gently with a soft cotton cloth. Stay strong and eat good, clean food.

Don't worry, you are going to get through this difficult phase. Just make sure you do not shave the underarm or breast area on the treated side, and avoid applying ice packs or heating pads directly to the skin there. Keep your body hydrated and let yourself rest.

During my cousin's treatment, we wanted to apply home remedies like fresh aloe vera or homemade pastes to soothe the skin burns. But the doctors strictly warned us not to do this as it can cause infection. Only use the specific moisturizing creams prescribed by your radiation team.
